College Application Essay Tips From Experienced Counselor (Video)

Getting started on your college application essay can be stressful. It is what sets you apart from other applicants, and gives admissions officers a look into your life outside your grades and extracurricular activities. It’s your chance to show them why you would be a perfect fit for their university.

In the video below, Dr. Robin Boren, consultant and owner of The College Doctor, LLC, describes five key tips for writing your college application essay. She emphasizes that in order to apply with your strongest work, you need to:

  • Show rather than tell. You want the readers to feel like they are right there with you, so use as many descriptors as you can.
  • Consider writing about weaknesses. Know that an essay about how you learn from and overcome weaknesses can be just as compelling as a story about a huge success.
  • Let it come naturally. If you feel like you are forcing it, stop and pick a new topic for your essay. The story you want to tell should flow out of you easily, and your passion for that story will come through.
  • Seek help from English teachers. Remember that senior year teachers are very busy during application season, so consider reaching out to a teacher you had in previous years. They know who you are as a student, and would be happy to help you get a jump on the application process.
  • Embrace your uniqueness. Admissions officers are tired of hearing the same stories, so don’t shy away from what makes you different. Write about what sets you apart, and why you deserve a spot in next year’s class.

Follow these suggestions, and you’ll be well on your way to gaining admittance to your top-choice school.
